Description:
Original personal bank check dated September 16, 1971, completed and signed by General Mark W. Clark, one of the most prominent American military commanders of the Second World War and Korean War era. The check is drawn on The First National Bank of South Carolina in Charleston and made payable to “Consumers Power Co.” in the amount of $20.00.
The check prominently features the printed heading “GENERAL MARK W. CLARK” at the upper left, with Clark’s signature appearing clearly in blue ink along the lower right signature line. A large red “PAID” bank stamp is present across the center of the check, along with period processing and deposit markings that document the item’s authentic commercial use.
The reverse contains additional bank endorsement stamps and processing marks from September 1971. The document exhibits normal handling wear and expected signs of banking circulation consistent with its age and use, while remaining highly presentable within its PSA/DNA encapsulation.
Historical Context:
General Mark Wayne Clark was one of the United States Army’s most significant senior commanders during the mid-20th century. Born in 1896, Clark graduated from West Point and rose through the military ranks to become one of the youngest lieutenant generals in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Clark is best remembered for commanding Allied forces during the Italian Campaign, including the liberation of Rome in June 1944, making him one of the central American military leaders in the European Theater. He previously served as General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s deputy during the planning stages of Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa.
Following World War II, Clark continued his military career during the Korean War, where he became Commander in Chief of United Nations forces in Korea. He later served as president of The Citadel military college in South Carolina, further cementing his legacy as both a military strategist and educator.
Autographed financial documents from General Clark are desirable artifacts linking collectors directly to one of America’s most recognized World War II commanders. Checks signed during his retirement years are especially appealing due to their strong signatures, historical association, and tangible connection to his postwar life in South Carolina.
Authentication & Encapsulation:
Authenticated and encapsulated by PSA/DNA as an “Authentic Auto,” certification number 85842680. The PSA holder securely preserves the check while allowing full visibility of both the front and reverse, including all period banking stamps and processing marks.
- Additional Documentation & Provenance: At buyer’s request, Historical Autographs Gallery will include an additional “Historical Autographs Gallery Certificate” signed by our company founder Luke Pascal at no cost.
