Title:
Ty Cobb Handwritten Envelope Addressed in Green Ink to North Carolina, Dated 1959 – Beckett & PSA/DNA Full Letters of Authentication

Description:
Presented is an original mailing envelope, entirely handwritten by baseball icon Ty Cobb and postmarked 1959, during the final years of his life. Addressed in Cobb’s distinctive green ink—an unmistakable hallmark of his post-career correspondence—the envelope was sent to Mrs. Edith (Wesley) Rowland, Brasstown, North Carolina, General Delivery, Cherokee Co. The return address on the reverse is also penned in Cobb’s hand: T. R. Cobb, 4719 Jokake Road, North Phoenix, Ariz. The envelope bears a Scottsdale, Arizona postmark and is partially franked with a U.S. postage stamp that has some loss at the upper right corner.

Condition is consistent with age, showing light edge wear, corner creases, and a torn upper edge where the stamp was removed or damaged. However, Cobb's handwriting remains crisp, vivid, and completely legible—particularly noteworthy given his tendency to use green ink, which has remained well-preserved here.

Historical Context:
Tyrus Raymond Cobb (1886–1961), inducted as one of the inaugural members of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936, is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. By the time he wrote this envelope in 1959, Cobb was living in relative isolation in Arizona, having spent his post-playing years investing wisely, engaging in correspondence, and reflecting on his controversial legacy. Known for his meticulousness, Cobb chose to write personal letters and envelopes in green ink, which has since become a signature of authenticity for collectors. This artifact comes from that late period in Cobb’s life—just two years before his passing—offering a poignant glimpse into the private world of a man whose competitive fire defined the Deadball Era.

Authentication & Encapsulation:
This item has been fully authenticated by both PSA/DNA and Beckett Authentication Services (BAS). It is accompanied by full Letters of Authenticity from each.

  • Additional Documentation & Provenance: At buyer’s request, Historical Autographs Gallery will include an additional “Historical Autographs Gallery Certificate” signed by our company founder Luke Pascal at no cost.

Closing Appeal:
Dated 1959, this envelope represents one of the final known handwritten pieces from Ty Cobb, composed just two years before his death. The bold green ink and personal touch make it an exceptional collector’s piece—both as a baseball relic and as a rare autograph variant. Supported by full dual authentication, this envelope is a standout example of Cobb’s iconic post-career correspondence and an essential acquisition for any serious vintage baseball or autograph collector.
