Description:
Offered here is an original fabric swatch cut from a suit screen-worn by legendary entertainer Jackie Gleason in the 1963 Paramount film Papa’s Delicate Condition. The swatch is a section of brown wool, housed in a protective archival sleeve for preservation and handling. This swatch originates from the original Sy Devore-tailored suit worn by Jackie Gleason and is presented with supporting visual documentation for provenance.
The original suit, tailored on May 9, 1962, was marked with a custom Sy Devore interior label:
"SY DEVORE / HOLLYWOOD — LAS VEGAS / SHERMAN OAKS — PALM SPRINGS / Name: JACKIE GLEASON / Date: 5-9-62 / No. 8831."
Historical Context:
Jackie Gleason (1916–1987) was one of the most beloved and influential figures in American entertainment, widely known for his portrayal of Ralph Kramden in The Honeymooners. His role in Papa’s Delicate Condition showcased his versatility, portraying the whimsical and flawed “Jack Griffith” in a performance that blended comedy with heartwarming sincerity. The film, based on Corinne Griffith’s memoir, was released at a high point in Gleason’s post-television film career.
The full suit from which this swatch was derived was sold at Christie’s (Sale 7117, December 1990, Lot #115) and originally originated from Paramount Pictures. Tailored by Sy Devore, a designer renowned for clothing Hollywood’s elite, the suit is closely tied to Gleason’s cinematic legacy and mid-century Hollywood styling.
Authentication & Encapsulation:
This fabric swatch is accompanied by printed visual documentation referencing its origin from the original screen-worn suit sold at Christie’s in December 1990 (Sale 7117, Lot #115), previously owned by Paramount Pictures. The provenance has been authenticated by Luke Pascal, the founder of Historical Autographs Gallery.
Closing Appeal:
Though modest in size, this fabric swatch represents a direct and tangible link to the legendary Jackie Gleason and his role in Papa’s Delicate Condition. Ideal for collectors of Hollywood memorabilia, classic film artifacts, or mid-century costume design, it is an affordable and authenticated piece of Old Hollywood history—perfect for framing or archiving as part of a larger collection.
