Historical Context:
William Strong (1808–1895) served on the U.S. Supreme Court from 1870 to 1880, appt. by President Ulysses S. Grant. Prior to that, he served on the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and as a justice on the U.S. Circuit Court. A skilled jurist, Strong was involved in several major rulings during the Reconstruction era and was known for his deep commitment to legal order and national unity. He also played a pivotal role as one of the five Supreme Court justices appointed to the Electoral Commission of 1877, which controversially resolved the disputed presidential election in favor of Rutherford B. Hayes. After retiring from the bench in 1880, Strong remained active in legal and religious affairs, including international arbitration work.
