Title:
Warren G. Harding Handwritten & Signed Postcard from Switzerland "We are making a lot of money over here by the Duchess buying things under price." — PSA/DNA Certified

Description:
Offered here is a beautifully preserved Autograph Postcard Signed (APS) by future U.S. President Warren G. Harding, written entirely in his hand and signed “W.G.H.” The postcard was sent from Lucerne, Switzerland, and is postmarked September 6, 1903. It features a colorful image titled “Luzern mit Pilatus,” depicting the lakeside city with the majestic Mount Pilatus in the background. Measuring approximately 3.5" x 5.5", the postcard has been slabbed and authenticated by PSA/DNA (Cert #85503881).

Harding addresses the postcard to Mrs. C.E. Sawyer of Marion, Ohio—wife of Dr. Charles E. Sawyer, Harding’s longtime personal physician and later a trusted member of his presidential inner circle.

Full Transcription (Front):

"Looks poor, doesn’t it? And the post card does not do justice. We are making a lot of money over here by the Duchess buying things under price. W.G.H. Lucerne Sept 6."

The message reveals Harding’s characteristic charm and economic awareness, offering a window into his travels through Europe and a tone of shrewd business observation, all delivered with a casual familiarity befitting a close family friend.

Historical Context:
At the time this postcard was sent in 1903, Warren G. Harding was a prominent Ohio newspaper publisher and state senator, still nearly two decades away from the presidency. The recipient, Mrs. C.E. Sawyer, was part of Harding’s trusted Marion circle. Her husband, Dr. Charles E. Sawyer, would later serve as the official White House physician and a controversial figure during Harding’s presidency—especially for his outsized influence on medical and administrative decisions.

The postcard illustrates Harding’s tendency to remain connected with his inner circle even while abroad, blending personal warmth with observations about foreign commerce—an early sign of his attention to both personal loyalty and international economic trends.

Authentication & Encapsulation:
This postcard has been professionally authenticated and encapsulated by PSA/DNA, bearing certification number 85503881. It remains in fine condition, with strong, legible handwriting and a clearly postmarked Swiss stamp. The color lithograph image is well-preserved, and the card exhibits only modest age wear consistent with over a century of preservation.

Closing Appeal:
This is a rare and intimate early artifact from the life of Warren G. Harding, revealing his voice, personality, and relationships long before he ascended to the presidency. With a direct connection to the Sawyers—key figures in Harding’s personal and presidential life—this signed postcard is a meaningful addition for collectors of presidential autographs, turn-of-the-century Americana, or historically certified ephemera.
