Rutherford B. Hayes Signed Real Estate Deed – Full Signature on 1882 Land Transfer – PSA/DNA Certified & Slabbed
Description:
Original real estate document signed in full by Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th President of the United States, dated November 9, 1882. The document is a legal deed transferring Hayes’s interest in a property located in Fremont, Ohio. The deed, handwritten in part, states:
"...all the right title and interest of the said R. B. Hayes in that bout of Inlot 123 as occupied by the new building between the White Block and the old Brickrow Block in Fremont Ohio and also the said new building..."
Hayes has signed boldly as R. B. Hayes on the final page, with two witnesses listed as J. J. Greene and M. D. Lindsey. The deed features beautiful period legal language and is partially handwritten on preprinted legal stationery. It is encapsulated in a PSA/DNA tamper-evident holder and certified as “AUTHENTIC AUTO” (Cert. #69622193). The ink remains strong and legible, and the document presents well overall with only minor age-related toning and edge wear.
Historical Context:
Following his presidency (1877–1881), Rutherford B. Hayes retired to his estate in Fremont, Ohio, where he remained active in philanthropic, educational, and civic affairs. The property mentioned in the deed is located in Fremont (formerly Lower Sandusky), a city Hayes deeply loved and where he spent the majority of his adult life. Documents like this reveal Hayes’s enduring connection to his hometown and offer an authentic piece of his personal and legal legacy.
Authentication & Encapsulation:
Certified and encapsulated by PSA/DNA with label reading “R.B. Hayes – Authentic Auto – PSA/DNA Certified” and certification number 69622193.
