Martin Van Buren ALS – Fourth President of the United States – Signed Letter Dated November 1, 1826 – PSA Letter of Authenticity #AR05363
Description:
A scarce and historically significant Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) by Martin Van Buren, entirely handwritten and signed "M. Van Buren," dated Albany, November 1, 1826. Penned while Van Buren was serving as one of New York's most influential political leaders and shortly before becoming Governor of New York, the letter concerns legal and financial matters involving the estate of Mrs. Thomas and references communications with Mr. Van Schaack regarding creditor claims and the proposed settlement of the estate.
The letter is written in rich brown ink on a folded sheet and concludes with Van Buren's bold signature. A postscript requests additional information concerning another individual involved in the matter. The autograph remains dark and well-defined, and the letter exhibits the expected folds and light age toning consistent with a manuscript of this period while remaining highly presentable.

My dear Sir,
Mr. Van Schaack has written to you on the subject of Peter Vosburgh affairs but has received no answer. Have the goodness to let him know Mrs. Thomas's determination without delay on the interests of the creditors suffer from her delay already incurred. I believe the property will be sufficient to pay all the subsequent creditors if I know that Mrs. Thomas's chance of payment will depend upon the execution of the proposed agreement, which will be dependent by his direct. (?)
Yours truly, your friend,
M. Van Buren
P.S. Write if you please direct to Mr. V.D.S. who is for a city trustee.
Historical Context:
Martin Van Buren (1782-1862) was one of the principal architects of the American Democratic Party and one of the most influential political strategists of the early nineteenth century. Written in 1826, this letter dates from a pivotal period in Van Buren's career, when he served as a United States Senator from New York and had already established the powerful Albany Regency political organization that reshaped state and national politics.
Within two years of writing this letter, Van Buren would be elected Governor of New York before joining President Andrew Jackson's administration as Secretary of State. He later served as Vice President and, in 1837, became the eighth President of the United States. Letters from this formative stage of his political career provide valuable insight into his legal practice, administrative responsibilities, and extensive political and professional network.
