1852 Autograph Note Signed by President Martin Van Buren – PSA/DNA Certified & Encapsulated

Description:
Offered here is an elegant and historically rich Autograph Note Signed (ANS) by Martin Van Buren, the 8th President of the United States, written in his hand and dated May 1, 1852, from his Lindenwald estate in Kinderhook, New York. The note is addressed to Col. Thompson, a longtime friend, and reads in full:

“Mr. Van Buren presents his kind regards to his old friend Col. Thompson and returns thanks for a copy of the Col's very able & interesting sketch of the life & character of Mr. Speaker Boyd.”

The reverse is neatly inscribed “Lindenwald / May 1st 1852”, confirming the date and location of authorship. The document is penned on light blue stationery, clearly written with bold ink and exhibiting only faint signs of age. It is housed in a PSA/DNA encapsulated holder, authenticated as an original signed document with certification number 85529640.

Historical Context:
By 1852, Martin Van Buren had been retired from public office for over a decade, yet he remained a respected elder statesman and active correspondent. The recipient of this note, Col. Thompson, shared with Van Buren a tribute to Linn Boyd, who was then serving as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives (1851–1855). Boyd, a Kentucky Democrat, played a prominent role in debates surrounding the Compromise of 1850 and the sectional tensions of the antebellum period.

Van Buren’s thoughtful acknowledgment of the sketch not only demonstrates his continuing engagement with national affairs but also reflects the mutual respect and camaraderie among influential 19th-century political figures—even in retirement.

Authentication & Encapsulation:

  • Authentication Service: PSA/DNA

  • Certification Number: 85529640

  • Type: Autograph Note Signed (ANS)

  • Encapsulation: Housed in a PSA/DNA tamper-evident slab with full front and reverse display.

Closing Appeal:
This is a fine, personal note penned and signed by President Martin Van Buren, offering direct insight into his relationships and political observations during his post-presidency years. Notes referencing contemporary political leaders such as Speaker Boyd add unique historical value, while the PSA/DNA encapsulation ensures authenticity and long-term preservation. A superb addition for collectors of presidential autographs, 19th-century politics, or early American statesmanship.
