Title:
Free Franked Envelope Signed by President John Tyler — PSA/DNA Certified
Description:
Original free franked envelope addressed and signed by John Tyler, 10th President of the United States. The envelope is boldly hand-addressed to J.J. French, Box 1203, P.O., Boston, Massachusetts, and features Tyler’s signature in the upper right corner, “J. Tyler,” alongside the word “FREE” — a privilege afforded to former presidents and certain federal officials, allowing them to send mail without postage.
A clear postal cancellation from Richmond, Virginia, dated April 3 (year not visible), appears on the left side of the envelope, consistent with Tyler’s post-presidency residence in Virginia. The envelope remains in very fine condition, protected in a tamper-evident PSA/DNA slab for long-term preservation and display. The ink remains dark and fully legible, with the address and signature clean and well-executed.
Historical Context:
John Tyler (1790–1862) served as the 10th President of the United States from 1841 to 1845, succeeding to the presidency upon the death of William Henry Harrison. A staunch advocate for states’ rights, Tyler’s presidency was marked by significant constitutional precedent-setting, particularly regarding presidential succession.
After leaving office, Tyler returned to his home state of Virginia, where he remained active in politics, eventually aligning with the Confederacy shortly before his death — making him the only U.S. president to be aligned with a rival government at the time of his passing. Correspondence from his post-presidency years, especially free franks, are valued relics of the era and reflect the privileges still extended to former heads of state.
