Title:
James A. Garfield Autograph - 20th President of the United States - PSA/DNA Authentic

Description:
A handsome autograph of James A. Garfield (1831-1881), the 20th President of the United States, boldly signed "J. A. Garfield" in dark ink on a narrow ruled paper slip. Garfield's signature is prominently executed across nearly the entire width of the piece, displaying the flowing penmanship characteristic of his autograph.

The paper exhibits expected light age toning and minor handling wear, while the signature remains strong, distinct, and highly presentable. The verso is blank apart from the visible ruling of the paper. Exact dimensions of the autograph slip are not provided.

Historical Context:
James A. Garfield was a Union general, congressman, and the 20th President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1881, until his death on September 19 of that year. A remarkable self-made figure, Garfield rose from modest beginnings in Ohio to become an educator and attorney before entering politics. During the Civil War, he served in the Union Army and attained the rank of major general.

Garfield subsequently represented Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives for nearly two decades before emerging as the Republican presidential nominee in 1880. His presidency lasted only about six months. On July 2, 1881, Garfield was shot by Charles J. Guiteau at a Washington railroad station. He lingered for more than two months before dying on September 19, 1881, making his tenure one of the shortest presidencies in American history.

Authentication & Encapsulation:
The autograph has been professionally authenticated and encapsulated by PSA/DNA, whose label identifies the piece as "CUT JAMES A. GARFIELD PSA/DNA CERTIFIED" and bears certification number 85855949. The autograph is housed in PSA's protective tamper-evident holder, preserving the original paper and signature while providing independent authentication.

• Additional Documentation & Provenance: At buyer’s request, Historical Autographs Gallery will include an additional “Historical Autographs Gallery Certificate” signed by our company founder Luke Pascal at no cost.

Closing Appeal:
Garfield's abbreviated presidency and assassination have made him one of the more compelling figures of the post-Civil War presidency. This boldly penned and PSA/DNA-certified example offers collectors an attractive opportunity to acquire an authentic autograph of the 20th President of the United States.
