Harry S. Truman Signed Presidential Yacht Card – PSA/DNA Certified
This exceptionally rare signed Presidential Yacht Card by Harry S. Truman, dated August 19, 1949, is one of the most unique White House-related artifacts we have ever handled. The card features a raised embossed image of the presidential flag in the upper left corner, a distinctive element used on official stationery aboard the USS Williamsburg (AGC-369), the presidential yacht during Truman’s administration.
Adding to its significance, Truman personally inscribed the card: "A grand weekend with Mr. Clifford," followed by his bold full signature, Harry S. Truman.
The recipient, Clark Clifford, was one of Truman’s most trusted advisors, serving as White House Counsel from 1946 to 1950. Clifford played a critical role in shaping Truman’s Cold War policies, including the Truman Doctrine, the establishment of NATO, and the recognition of Israel. He later served as Secretary of Defense under President Lyndon B. Johnson. His close relationship with Truman makes this signed card not just a presidential autograph, but an artifact directly tied to Cold War diplomacy and post-World War II leadership.
August 19, 1949 – A Notable Date Aboard the USS Williamsburg
While specific records of activities aboard the USS Williamsburg on August 19, 1949, are scarce, the inscription indicates that President Truman and Clark Clifford spent that weekend together on the presidential yacht. During this period, Truman and Clifford were deeply engaged in significant policy discussions, including the recent nomination of Tom C. Clark to the Supreme Court, who was confirmed by the Senate on August 18, 1949.
The USS Williamsburg served as a venue for both relaxation and high-level discussions, providing a private setting away from the formalities of the White House. Given the timing, it's plausible that Truman and Clifford used this weekend to deliberate on pressing national matters, reflecting the close working relationship between the President and his counsel.
Presidential Yacht Cards – The Rarest of White House Stationery
This is the first official Presidential Yacht Card we have ever handled, making it an extraordinary find. While collectors of White House cards, official engravings, and presidential stationery seek out signed executive ephemera, this presidential yacht card is exponentially rarer and far more unique. Unlike standard White House cards, which were frequently signed for guests and dignitaries, yacht cards were used exclusively aboard the president’s private vessel, making them far scarcer and deeply tied to informal but important moments in history.
The USS Williamsburg served as Truman’s floating White House, where he entertained world leaders, advisors, and close friends. It was aboard this ship that Truman discussed major policy decisions away from Washington, making documents and signatures associated with it exceptionally rare compared to traditional White House stationery.
Authentication & Encapsulation
This Harry S. Truman signed and inscribed Presidential Yacht Card has been authenticated and encapsulated by PSA/DNA, ensuring its authenticity and preservation (Cert #85375207).
Collector’s Appeal
This one-of-a-kind piece ties into White House card collections, yet stands far above them in terms of rarity and historical significance. As a signed Presidential Yacht Card from the USS Williamsburg, it is among the most elusive forms of presidential autographs, making it a centerpiece for collectors of Truman memorabilia, Cold War history, and official presidential artifacts. A museum-worthy addition to any advanced presidential collection.
