Description: This is an original typed letter signed by Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United States, dated January 16, 1953, on the letterhead of DDE from the Hotel Commodore in New York City. The letter is addressed to Mr. David Livingston of Washington, Iowa, thanking him for his contributions to Eisenhower's successful 1952 presidential campaign.

Eisenhower’s signature is bold and clear, rendered in black ink, signed “Dwight D. Eisenhower.” The letter has been authenticated and encapsulated by PSA/DNA, with certification number 85246169, visible on the slab, which provides tamper-proof protection for the document. This letter was written just days before Eisenhower's inauguration, making it a significant piece of history directly related to his rise to the presidency.

Content: In the letter, Eisenhower expresses his gratitude to Mr. Livingston for his support during the campaign. Eisenhower acknowledges the hard work and efforts of those who contributed to his victory, noting that the letter should have been sent earlier but that the post-election activities had caused some delay. He emphasizes the importance of their continued efforts as they embark on fulfilling the promises made during the campaign.

Eisenhower writes:

“I am writing you to express our heartfelt gratitude for the work you did on behalf of our campaign. I want you to know that I am deeply appreciative. On November 4th we won the right to embark upon the Crusade to which you and I had pledged ourselves.”

He concludes by affirming his commitment to keeping the faith with his supporters and fulfilling his campaign pledges as President.

Historical Background: Dwight D. Eisenhower, a five-star general and the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe during World War II, was elected the 34th President of the United States in a landslide victory in the 1952 presidential election. Running as a Republican against Democrat Adlai Stevenson, Eisenhower secured 442 electoral votes to Stevenson's 89, reflecting the public's overwhelming desire for a strong leader during the Cold War.

Eisenhower’s campaign was built on the promise to end the Korean War and to fight communism at home and abroad. His platform, often referred to as a "Crusade," resonated deeply with a public eager for peace and stability after years of conflict. His slogan, “I Like Ike,” became iconic and symbolized his broad appeal across the political spectrum. Eisenhower's victory ushered in a new era of Republican leadership in the White House, after 20 years of Democratic dominance under Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman.

The 1952 election was also notable for Eisenhower's strategic use of television, a new and powerful medium for political messaging. His calm and authoritative demeanor helped him connect with the American public, presenting himself as a figure of reassurance during a time of international tension and domestic uncertainty.
