Calvin Coolidge Signed 1928 International Civil Aeronautics Conference First Day Cover – PSA/DNA Certified Authentic (#85878261)
Description:
Original First Day Cover bearing the 5-cent International Civil Aeronautics Conference commemorative stamp, postmarked Washington, D.C., December 12, 1928, the official first day of issue. The cover is addressed to Mr. J. Venturi, Teaneck, New Jersey, and retains its classic red, white, and blue airmail border.
President Calvin Coolidge has boldly signed the left side of the envelope in dark graphite pencil, with the autograph displaying excellent legibility and strong visual appeal. The signature is well positioned away from the postal markings, allowing it to stand out prominently against the lightly toned vintage envelope.
The reverse remains intact with the original envelope flap and period printing reading, "This envelope approved by the U.S. Post Office Dept., for AIR MAIL ONLY. Use for other purposes not permitted." The cover exhibits expected age toning, light creasing, and handling wear consistent with its nearly century-old age while remaining exceptionally attractive.
The piece is professionally encapsulated by PSA/DNA for long-term preservation and display.
Historical Context:
Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933), the 30th President of the United States, served from 1923 to 1929 following the death of Warren G. Harding. Nicknamed "Silent Cal," Coolidge became known for his restrained leadership style, commitment to limited government, fiscal conservatism, and economic prosperity during much of the Roaring Twenties. He chose not to seek reelection in 1928, making autographs from his final year in office particularly desirable.
This First Day Cover commemorates the International Civil Aeronautics Conference, held in Washington, D.C., in December 1928. The conference reflected the growing international importance of aviation during the interwar period and coincided with a transformative era in commercial and military flight. Covers bearing the first-day cancellation for this issue, particularly those signed by President Coolidge during his final weeks in office, represent an exceptional intersection of presidential history and early American aviation.
