Title: Andrew Johnson Handwritten Note Signed (ANS) Regarding Naval Appointments – PSA/DNA Certified

Description:
Presented is an authentic Autograph Note Signed (ANS) by Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States, penned in pencil on both sides of an off-white 3.75" x 2.5" card. The note is neatly housed and PSA/DNA encapsulated for preservation and authentication (Certification Number: 85467479).

The note reads in full:

"Mr. R. has been here & had some conversation in reference to changes in the Navy which he will explain to you – If anything can be done in the premises consistent with the interest of the naval service I hope it will be done for Mr. R. –

Andrew Johnson"

The note is in fine condition, with some light areas but a fully legible pencil inscription, with a bold signature. Faint circular rust mark at the top from an old paperclip, and minor toning typical of its age.

Historical Context:
Andrew Johnson (1808–1875) served as the 17th President of the United States following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in April 1865. Johnson's presidency was marked by the tumultuous Reconstruction era and his frequent clashes with Congress over the direction of post-Civil War policy, which ultimately led to his impeachment by the House of Representatives in 1868 (he was acquitted by a single vote in the Senate).

This handwritten note reflects Johnson's engagement with matters of military and naval administration, even amid the broader political chaos of his presidency. The note mentions "Mr. R." and references proposed changes within the Navy, suggesting Johnson's endorsement should any such changes align with the service's interests. Johnson's attention to Navy affairs, despite being embroiled in larger Reconstruction disputes, illustrates the breadth of responsibilities he managed in a divided post-war nation.

Authentication & Encapsulation:
The note is encapsulated by PSA/DNA with the designation "Authentic Auto" and certification number 85467479, ensuring both its authenticity and preservation. The slab protects the delicate pencil script while offering a clear, display-ready presentation.

Closing Appeal:
This is a significant and appealing piece of presidential correspondence, showcasing Andrew Johnson's handwritten reflections on naval personnel matters. Items bearing Johnson’s autograph—especially in such a direct, personal communication—are scarce and highly sought after by collectors of presidential and Civil War-era memorabilia. The PSA encapsulation adds a layer of confidence and preservation to this rare artifact from a turbulent chapter in American history.
