Title:
1864 Ohio Union Presidential Ticket – Abraham Lincoln & Andrew Johnson – Civil War Soldier’s Ballot from Seneca County

Description:
Original 1864 printed Union Presidential Ticket from Seneca County, Ohio, issued for the pivotal election of November 8, 1864, during the height of the Civil War. The ticket endorses Abraham Lincoln of Illinois for President and Andrew Johnson of Tennessee for Vice President, representing the National Union Party, a temporary wartime coalition of Republicans and War Democrats.

This tall, narrow slip is printed in black ink on period stock and headed with the words “Union Presidential Ticket”, along with a detailed woodcut of Columbia, personifying liberty and patriotism, wearing a Native American-style headdress and holding a liberty cap and shield. Beneath the candidate names is a complete list of Ohio’s presidential electors, including John M. Connell, Stanley Matthews, Seth Marshall, and Abner Kellogg.

The reverse side shows faint ink transfer from long-term storage or original printing processes, typical of 19th-century ballots. The ticket displays light handling wear and mild toning but remains clean, well-preserved, and highly legible, with “Seneca County” clearly printed at top.

Historical Context:
Printed for use by Union soldiers and Ohio citizens during the historic 1864 presidential election, this ballot represents support for Abraham Lincoln’s re-election amid the ongoing Civil War. Facing Democratic challenger George B. McClellan, Lincoln campaigned on a platform of unity and unconditional victory. His running mate, Andrew Johnson—a Southern Democrat loyal to the Union—was selected to broaden bipartisan appeal. This election marked the first time in U.S. history that absentee ballots were widely used by soldiers, making ballots like this one not just political ephemera but direct artifacts of wartime democracy.
