Abraham Lincoln Wallpaper Swatch from Lincoln’s Death Room in the Petersen House – CAG Encapsulated
Description:
An extraordinary and deeply moving historical artifact—this .75" x .5" swatch of wallpaper was taken from the very room in which President Abraham Lincoln died, following his assassination in 1865. The fragment originates from the Petersen House, the Washington, D.C. boarding house where Lincoln was taken after being shot at Ford’s Theatre. The piece is encapsulated by CAG (Collectibles Authentication Guaranty) in a sealed and tamper-evident holder measuring 2.375'' x 3.375'', with a full label noting its origin: “Swatch of Wallpaper from Lincoln’s Death Room in the Petersen House.”
This small yet profoundly significant fragment stands as a silent witness to one of the most sorrowful moments in American history.
Historical Context:
On the night of April 14, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln was shot by actor and Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth while attending a performance at Ford’s Theatre. Gravely wounded, Lincoln was carried across the street to the Petersen House, located at 516 10th Street, NW, where he was laid on a bed too small for his frame. Surrounded by doctors, Cabinet members, and loved ones, the 16th President of the United States succumbed to his injuries at 7:22 a.m. on April 15, 1865.
The room where Lincoln spent his final hours has since become one of the most solemn pilgrimage sites in American memory. Carefully preserved by the National Park Service, the interior remains arranged to mirror its appearance that tragic morning—including the wallpaper that lined the room's walls.
This artifact offers a rare opportunity to own a genuine piece of that historic setting.
