Two-Page Autograph Letter Signed by Jim Younger of the James-Younger Gang – Rare Political Commentary and Personal Reflections

Description:
Offered here is an outstanding Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) by Jim Younger, a member of the notorious James-Younger Gang, comprising two full pages handwritten in elegant cursive. Addressed to Mrs. Denny, a known correspondent of the Younger family, the letter is filled with personal observations, updates on mutual acquaintances, and notably, political reflections.

Jim closes the letter with an engaging and rare account of his experience at a Republican Convention in St. Paul, describing how he predicted the outcome of a nomination:

“…I left my ‘carcass’ on the bed last Thursday night and attended the Republican Convention in St. Paul and not only heard and saw what was going on, but told the boys in the library the next morning who was nominated, and that he was nominated on the 3d ballot… Just as I had said!”

This likely refers to the 1894 Minnesota Republican State Convention, held in St. Paul, where Knute Nelson was nominated for Governor. Nelson went on to win the general election and would later become a long-serving U.S. Senator. The 1894 convention was noted for its strategic importance in a shifting political landscape, as Republicans gained momentum during an era of national economic depression and labor unrest. That Younger followed and accurately predicted the outcome underscores his attentiveness to public affairs and political developments.

Throughout the letter, Jim also comments on interpersonal dynamics and expresses his appreciation for the recipient’s kind words about Cole Younger, stating his hope to pass along a message from "Mr. McClure" and referencing mutual friends with warmth and humor.

Signature:
The letter concludes with Jim’s full name, signed boldly: “Jim Younger”, in a clear and steady hand.

Historical Context:
Jim Younger (1848–1902) was one of the three Younger brothers who, alongside Jesse and Frank James, carried out a string of robberies across the Midwest in the post–Civil War years. Following the failed Northfield, Minnesota bank robbery in 1876, the Younger brothers were captured and became nationally known figures. In later years, Jim developed a reputation for thoughtfulness and composure. This letter reflects that matured perspective, revealing his keen interest in political and social affairs.

Unlike many outlaw correspondences that dwell on personal hardship, this letter uniquely captures Jim Younger’s intellectual engagement with the world beyond his immediate circumstances—especially his observations on the political climate of the time.

With full signature, vivid political commentary, and warm personal tone, this is a historically rich addition to any collection focused on the American West, 19th-century politics, or outlaw lore.
