Historic Civil Rights Leaders Signed Martin Luther King Jr. First Day Cover – PSA/DNA Certified
This remarkable First Day Cover (FDC) honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., featuring a bold "Black Heritage" cachet with a portrait of King, the inscription “We Shall Overcome”, and an illustration of civil rights marchers. The envelope is postmarked January 13, 1979, in Atlanta, Georgia, marking the first issuance of the Martin Luther King Jr. 15-cent commemorative stamp. Four of these stamps, depicting King alongside a civil rights march, are affixed to the cover, making this a powerful tribute to the movement he led.
This is the most significant Rosa Parks-signed item we have ever handled, and while Parks and Martin Luther King Sr. did occasionally sign items together, we have never seen a First Day Cover featuring this many civil rights icons. With four of the most important figures of the movement, this piece represents the pinnacle of civil rights collecting and history, making it an absolute centerpiece in any collection dedicated to the fight for racial equality and justice.
What makes this piece extraordinary is the presence of four historic signatures, each belonging to a key leader in the Civil Rights Movement who played a direct role in the fight for racial equality:
- Martin Luther King Sr. ("Daddy King") – The father of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., King Sr. was a prominent Baptist minister and civil rights leader in his own right. He served as pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, where both he and his son preached. He played a crucial role in shaping Dr. King's philosophy and was a lifelong advocate for justice and equality.
- Coretta Scott King – The wife and partner of Dr. King, Coretta became the torchbearer of his legacy after his assassination in 1968. She founded the King Center for Nonviolent Social Change, campaigned tirelessly for a national holiday in honor of Dr. King, and remained a leading voice for human rights and nonviolent activism until her passing.
- Roy Wilkins – One of the most influential civil rights leaders of the 20th century, Wilkins served as the executive director of the NAACP from 1955 to 1977. A key strategist behind the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Wilkins worked closely with Dr. King and other movement leaders to advance racial justice in America.
- Rosa Parks – Known as the "Mother of the Civil Rights Movement," Parks’ refusal to give up her bus seat in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955 sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a pivotal moment in the fight against segregation. Her quiet strength and lifelong commitment to justice made her one of the most enduring symbols of the movement.
