Title:
1950 Signed Check by Club Owner Jack Ruby – PSA/DNA Slabbed & Certified
Description:
Presented here is an original check dated April 4, 1950, signed by Jack Ruby, the infamous nightclub owner who later gained worldwide notoriety for the assassination of Lee Harvey Oswald, the accused killer of President John F. Kennedy. This check, drawn from the Silver Spur Club account at the Mercantile National Bank at Dallas, is made payable to "Cash" in the amount of $50.00. The check is neatly signed by Jack Ruby at the bottom right corner in black ink.
The front of the check features the club’s name and address ("Silver Spur, 1717 So. Ervay, Dallas, Texas") and bears date stamps and perforation markings consistent with its processing. The reverse side has standard banking endorsements and deposit stamps dated November 3, 1950. The check has been professionally slabbed and authenticated by PSA/DNA, with certification number 85481923.
Historical Context:
Jack Ruby operated several Dallas nightclubs and strip joints, including the Carousel Club and the Silver Spur. While he was a minor figure in Dallas’s nightlife during the 1940s and 1950s, he became a pivotal figure in American history when, on November 24, 1963, he fatally shot Lee Harvey Oswald on live television—just two days after President Kennedy’s assassination.
This check predates the Kennedy assassination by over a decade, offering a rare and mundane snapshot into Ruby’s everyday business operations long before he would become entwined in one of the most scrutinized events in U.S. history. Items bearing Ruby’s authentic signature from this earlier era are considerably scarcer than those dating from after his arrest.
Authentication & Encapsulation:
-
Certified Authentic by PSA/DNA
-
Certification Number: 85481923
-
Encapsulated in PSA slab labeled "CHECK / JACK RUBY / PSA/DNA CERTIFIED / AUTHENTIC AUTO"
Both sides of the check remain clearly legible, with typical bank cancellation marks and handling wear consistent with age and circulation. The signature is crisp and bold, offering a striking contrast against the check's background.
Closing Appeal:
This PSA-authenticated check provides collectors with a chilling connection to one of the most consequential figures in the Kennedy assassination saga. As an early financial document signed by Jack Ruby—well before he became a historical flashpoint—this piece captures a rare moment of normalcy in the life of a man whose actions would later send shockwaves across the nation. A compelling addition for collectors of American history, true crime memorabilia, or Kennedy-era artifacts.
