Thomas A. Edison Signed Check from Edison Botonic Research Corporation – PSA/DNA Encapsulated & Certified
Description:
Offered here is an original bank check drawn from the Edison Botonic Research Corporation, dated October 18, 1932, signed clearly by legendary inventor Thomas A. Edison as “Thos. A. Edison.” The check, numbered 851, is made payable to Henry F. Schmidt & Co. for the amount of $130.00, and is co-signed by J. Miller. The check is printed on Edison Botonic Research Corporation stock and is drawn from the Savings Investment & Trust Company in East Orange, New Jersey. It has been professionally slabbed and authenticated by PSA/DNA, with certification number 85724963.
The signature is placed boldly along the lower right portion in black ink and remains exceptionally well-preserved. Minor cancellation marks (including punch holes) are present, as expected with checks of this era. The reverse side of the check bears multiple banking stamps and handwritten notations consistent with bank processing.
Historical Context:
The Edison Botonic Research Corporation, founded in 1927, was a collaborative initiative between Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and Harvey Firestone. Their mission was to find a domestic source of rubber to reduce American dependence on foreign suppliers—a pressing concern in the interwar period. This check dates to the final years of Edison's life; he passed away in October 1931, making this 1932 check especially notable. It may have been processed posthumously from an account he previously managed, or written shortly before his death, as some checks during this period remained in circulation due to banking delays or organizational transitions. Co-signer J. Miller, listed as Treasurer, likely facilitated its issuance.
As one of the most iconic American inventors, Thomas Edison’s autograph remains highly sought after. His association with this corporation reflects his enduring commitment to scientific advancement, even late in life.
