This bold and historic cut signature of Sam Houston, one of the most legendary figures in Texas and American history, is an extraordinary artifact from the era of the Republic of Texas. The large and beautifully flourished signature appears on a fragment of an official document, with partial printed text referencing “... of Texas the 24th”, suggesting it originates from Houston’s time as President of the Republic of Texas or Governor of the State of Texas. His signature, written in deep brown ink, remains crisp, elegant, and highly legible, showcasing his distinctive penmanship.

Sam Houston’s Legacy

Sam Houston (1793–1863) was a founding father of Texas and a towering figure in early American expansion. He served as the Commander of Texan forces during the Texas Revolution, leading his army to victory against Mexico at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836, securing Texas’ independence. Houston became the first and third President of the Republic of Texas, later serving as a U.S. Senator and the seventh Governor of Texas. He was the only person in U.S. history to serve as governor of two different states (Tennessee and Texas). A staunch Unionist, Houston opposed Texas’ secession before the Civil War, a stance that led to his removal from office in 1861.
