Title:
Rare Example of Early George Washington Signature – Autograph Receipt Signed “G. Washington” – April 25, 1760 – PSA/DNA Certified NM–MT 8
Description:
Autograph receipt signed, “G. Washington,” dated Williamsburg, April 25th 1760. The manuscript, written entirely in Washington’s hand, reads in full:
“Williamsburg April 25th 1760
Rec’d of Wm McKenzie Ten pounds Sixteen Shillings Being a Years Int. on his Bond due 23d May next
G. Washington”
This early financial receipt documents Washington’s acknowledgment of payment from William McKenzie for “Ten pounds Sixteen Shillings,” representing a year’s interest on a bond due May 23rd of the following month. The signature, “G. Washington,” appears prominently at the conclusion in bold brown ink, displaying the fluid and deliberate penmanship characteristic of Washington’s mid-18th century hand.
The document is neatly written on period laid paper, now attractively toned with age, and shows expected fold lines consistent with 18th-century handling and storage. The piece has been professionally encapsulated, preserving its legibility and structural integrity while allowing clear visibility of the text and signature.
Historical Context:
In April 1760, George Washington was a 28-year-old Virginia planter and emerging political figure. Born February 22, 1732, Washington had resigned his commission as commander of the Virginia Regiment in December 1758 after years of service during the French and Indian War (1754–1763). By 1760, although the broader conflict continued, Washington had fully transitioned back to civilian life.
Following his marriage to Martha Dandridge Custis in January 1759, Washington settled into the management of Mount Vernon and the substantial Custis estates. He was elected in 1758 to the Virginia House of Burgesses, where he represented Frederick County and began establishing himself within Virginia’s political leadership. At this stage of his life, Washington was deeply involved in plantation management, land speculation, agricultural production, and private lending — activities reflected directly in this receipt for interest paid on a bond.
Documents from this formative pre-Revolutionary period provide rare insight into Washington not yet as General or President, but as a disciplined planter, legislator, and businessman building the foundations of his later prominence.
Authentication & Encapsulation:
