Full Transcription:
Dear Gilles and Brigitte –
Just sat over your Christmas Procession – 10 Secret Service men had to carry your box of records upstairs. They were really chosen with an eye to this family!! and how we will adore every one of them – John picked Solo Monk to play the first, which is the most terrible one. I took Horowitz – Scarlatti to my room and Caroline has taken Daphnis and Chloe to hers. + there are so many more and the little notebook. I have been searching for something like that all winter – I hope someone gave you things you love as much.
Love,
Jackie
Historical & Cultural Context:
Jacqueline Kennedy’s note is more than a holiday thank-you—it’s a vivid window into her cultivated personal world, filled with music, introspection, and artistic appreciation. The recordings mentioned reflect a broad range of musical taste within the Kennedy household:
-
"Solo Monk" (Thelonious Monk) – a haunting and expressive solo piano album, chosen by young John.
-
"Horowitz – Scarlatti" – performed by the legendary Vladimir Horowitz, bringing baroque intricacy and elegance.
-
"Daphnis and Chloé" – Maurice Ravel’s impressionistic ballet, filled with sweeping romanticism, claimed by Caroline.
Her reference to a “little notebook” included with the records reveals her longing for thoughtful commentary and personal meaning in music—a sentiment that shaped the Kennedy family’s cultural atmosphere.
