Title:
Eleanor Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed — PSA/DNA Certified MINT 9

Description:
An elegant typed letter signed (TLS) by Eleanor Roosevelt on her personal stationery, dated January 18, 1954, written from her New York residence at 211 East 62nd Street. Addressed to Mrs. Hawley, Roosevelt expresses polite regret at being unable to serve as patroness for an upcoming luncheon and fashion show, explaining that she will be out of town and “does not like to be just a name.” The letter closes warmly, “With many thanks for your letter and my regrets, Very sincerely yours,” followed by her bold, flowing full signature, Eleanor Roosevelt, in dark ink. The clarity and neat presentation of the signature and letter earned a high grade of MINT 9 from PSA/DNA.

Historical Context:
Eleanor Roosevelt (1884–1962) redefined the role of First Lady during her husband Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency (1933–1945), transforming it from a ceremonial position into one of activism and influence. After FDR’s death, she continued her lifelong commitment to public service, becoming a delegate to the United Nations General Assembly and serving as the first chair of the U.N. Commission on Human Rights, where she helped draft the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948). By 1954, when this letter was written, Roosevelt was one of the most respected voices in global humanitarianism and American civic life, known for her compassion, candor, and tireless advocacy for equality.

Authentication & Encapsulation:
Certified and encapsulated by PSA/DNA, graded MINT 9 for autograph quality (Cert. #85616228).

  • Additional Documentation & Provenance: At buyer’s request, Historical Autographs Gallery will include an additional “Historical Autographs Gallery Certificate” signed by our company founder Luke Pascal at no cost.

Closing Appeal:
A beautifully preserved Eleanor Roosevelt signed letter, written in her characteristic tone of humility and sincerity during her post-White House years of humanitarian prominence. The combination of pristine condition, PSA/DNA MINT 9 grading, and rich historical significance makes this an exceptional acquisition for collectors of presidential, First Lady, or human rights history.
