Title:
Philip Livingston Signed Document – Beckett Certified, Revolutionary-Era Content
Description:
Offered here is a scarce 18th-century signed document bearing the bold, full signature of Philip Livingston, a signer of the Declaration of Independence from New York. Written in flowing brown ink, the document is undated but marked “1767” in period script at the lower margin. Though significant paper loss is present in the upper right—affecting portions of the text—the signature remains completely intact and highly legible in the lower right.
The partially preserved document is addressed to a group of “Gentlemen” and discusses commercial dealings regarding brass kettles, referencing payment terms and suggesting logistical assistance. The tone and content reflect Livingston’s role as a well-established colonial merchant in New York prior to his political leadership during the American Revolution.
Surviving legible text includes:
"...he has 2 Nests Brass Kettles from 1 quart to No. 9... at 1/5/8, 9 Months Credit... Servicable to you in this Matter you may freely send your Directions which shall be Executed without any Charge to you..."
"I am your Most Hum. Servt / Phil. Livingston"
This historic document is accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services (Cert #AE62095) confirming the authenticity of the signature.
Historical Context:
Philip Livingston (1716–1778) was a prominent New York merchant and delegate to the Continental Congress, best known as a signer of the Declaration of Independence. His wealth, education, and political influence made him a leading voice in colonial resistance to British rule. Prior to the Revolution, Livingston was deeply involved in transatlantic trade and served as a member of the New York Provincial Congress. He played a key role in shaping early American governance and sacrificed greatly for the cause of independence, dying in service to the Continental Congress in 1778.
This document, though predating the Revolution, offers a rare surviving example of Livingston's commercial correspondence, illustrating the world of 18th-century American trade and its direct connection to the financial and leadership networks that would soon fuel the independence movement.
