Title:
Josiah Bartlett Land Deed Fragment – PSA/DNA Certified Mint 9 – Cut Signature & Handwritten Property Record
Description:
A scarce 18th-century manuscript deed fragment featuring the handwritten name of Josiah Bartlett, a distinguished signer of the Declaration of Independence, preserved within its original printed legal document. The surviving section contains the manuscript entry, "Josiah Bartlett," written in brown iron gall ink as part of a contemporary property conveyance, accompanied by additional period manuscript entries and the printed legal text beginning, "To HAVE AND TO HOLD..."
This historic fragment has been professionally encapsulated and authenticated by PSA/DNA, which has certified the piece as "CUT – JOSIAH BARTLETT" and awarded it an impressive Mint 9 Auto Grade, recognizing the exceptional quality and clarity of the handwriting.
The fragment is neatly cut from the original legal document and mounted within a PSA holder for long-term preservation and display. The signature area remains highly legible, with strong ink contrast against the original laid paper.
Historical Context:
Josiah Bartlett (1729–1795) was a physician, statesman, and one of New Hampshire's most prominent Revolutionary leaders. He was among the earliest delegates to vote in favor of American independence and became one of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Following the Revolution, Bartlett served as Chief Justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court before becoming the state's first constitutional Governor.
Authentic Bartlett manuscripts are considerably scarcer than those of many of his fellow Declaration signers, making surviving legal and land documents especially desirable. Because Bartlett routinely signed deeds, probate records, and official legal instruments during his public career, these documents provide tangible evidence of both his legal work and civic responsibilities in Revolutionary-era New Hampshire.
