A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, he served with distinction in the Mexican-American War, represented Mississippi in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, and served as United States Secretary of War under President Franklin Pierce from 1853 to 1857.

As Confederate president, Davis oversaw the political and military administration of the Southern war effort throughout the Civil War. Following the Confederate surrender, he was imprisoned for approximately two years at Fort Monroebefore being released on bail in 1867. Although indicted for treason, he was never brought to trial.
