Jefferson Davis Handwritten and Signed War Department Document – PSA/DNA Certified
This handwritten and signed document by Jefferson Davis, dated May 5, 1855, originates from his tenure as U.S. Secretary of War under President Franklin Pierce. The document, written in Davis' hand, states “The disallowance is confirmed”, and is boldly signed “Jefferson Davis, Sec. War”. The notation at the top, written in red ink, likely references an official record or case number.
At the time of signing, Davis was responsible for overseeing the U.S. Army and implementing military reforms. As Secretary of War from 1853 to 1857, he advocated for modernizing military equipment, expanding the nation's coastal defenses, and improving officer training. His leadership played a crucial role in shaping the pre-Civil War U.S. military. Just six years after this document was written, Davis would become President of the Confederate States of America, a defining figure in American history.
Following the Confederacy’s defeat in 1865, Davis was captured by Union forces in Irwinville, Georgia, on May 10, 1865, while attempting to flee. He was imprisoned at Fort Monroe, Virginia, for two years under harsh conditions but was never brought to trial. Released on bail in 1867, Davis spent his later years advocating for the Lost Cause narrative and writing his memoir, The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government.
