This is an original ink signature of Jefferson Davis, the first and only President of the Confederate States of America. The autograph, Jefferson Davis, is neatly rendered in black steel-tip fountain pen ink on a tan slip measuring approximately 1 3/4" x 3 1/4". The signature displays fine clarity with smooth, flowing strokes characteristic of Davis’s hand. The reverse of the card bears the notation 3/19/1888, possibly an early collector’s date annotation. The piece is accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Authentication (JSA), certifying the genuineness of the signature.
Historical Context:
Jefferson Davis (1808–1889) was a prominent American politician and soldier who served as U.S. Senator and Secretary of War before becoming President of the Confederacy during the American Civil War (1861–1865). After the Confederacy’s defeat, Davis was imprisoned for two years and later published his memoir, The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government, defending the Southern cause.
