Historical Context:
Joseph E. Johnston (1807–1891) was one of the most senior Confederate generals during the American Civil War, noted for his service in the First Battle of Bull Run, the Peninsula Campaign, and the Atlanta Campaign. A West Point graduate and veteran of the Mexican-American War, Johnston clashed frequently with Confederate President Jefferson Davis but was widely respected for his strategic caution and ability to preserve his armies under pressure. In April 1865, he surrendered to General William T. Sherman in North Carolina, effectively ending major Confederate resistance in the Carolinas. After the war, Johnston served in the U.S. House of Representatives and as a federal railroad commissioner.
