This is an original stock certificate for the Atlantic, Mississippi & Ohio Railroad Company (AM&O), issued on July 20th, 1872 to the estate of B. R. Gordon for four shares of stock.
The ornate certificate is printed in vivid green and black ink with an embossed orange seal, showcasing a finely engraved train scene framed by mountains and trees at the top center. Below the vignette is a symbolic allegorical figure, and the borders feature classical motifs with rich 19th-century design flourishes.
The certificate is hand-signed by William Mahone, then-president of the company and a notable Confederate General, civil engineer, and post-war politician. His bold ink signature appears on the lower right portion of the front.
