Historical Context:
Clara Barton (1821–1912), pioneering nurse and humanitarian, is best remembered as the founder of the American Red Cross in 1881. Her tireless work providing aid during the Civil War earned her the title "The Angel of the Battlefield." In her later years, she remained devoted to charitable healthcare, including founding the Clara Barton Hospital referenced in this receipt. This document dates to the final active phase of Barton’s public life, when she was still deeply engaged in fundraising and operational oversight from her home in Glen Echo—now a National Historic Site. A tangible piece of her enduring legacy in American medicine and disaster relief, this receipt offers a rare window into her personal involvement in day-to-day philanthropy.
