John M. Schofield (1831–1906) served as a Union general in the American Civil War, later becoming Secretary of War under President Andrew Johnson and Commanding General of the U.S. Army from 1888 to 1895. He earned the Medal of Honor for “conspicuous gallantry” at the Battle of Wilson's Creek (1861), where he "displayed conspicuous gallantry in leading a regiment in action under heavy fire."
