George B. McClellan Signed Cut – PSA/DNA Certified Authentic Autograph (Major General, 1863)
Description:
Presented here is an exceptionally preserved cut signature of Major General George B. McClellan, boldly penned in ink and dated February 5, 1863. The autograph reads:
“Geo B McClellan
Maj. Genl. USA
Boston (?)
Feb 5th 1863”
The signature is encapsulated in a PSA/DNA slab, with authentication label reading: “CUT / GEORGE B MCCLELLAN / AUTHENTIC AUTO / PSA/DNA CERTIFIED / 85389389.” The cut is affixed to a backing and displays excellent contrast against a black mat within the holder. The ink remains dark and legible, and the paper shows only mild age toning, consistent with its 19th-century origin.
Historical Context:
George B. McClellan (1826–1885) was one of the most prominent Union generals during the early years of the American Civil War. Known for organizing the Army of the Potomac and briefly serving as General-in-Chief of the Union Army, McClellan played a key role in the early development of Union military strategy. Though often criticized for his cautiousness and strained relationship with President Lincoln, he remained a popular figure among troops and many Northern citizens.
The date on this piece, February 5, 1863, finds McClellan in a period of forced military retirement following his dismissal by Lincoln in November 1862, just after the Battle of Antietam. The mention of "Berlin" likely refers to Berlin, Maryland (now Brunswick), or potentially a European location if McClellan was abroad. He would later re-enter public life as the Democratic nominee opposing Lincoln in the 1864 presidential election.
