Description:
This historical artifact features a bold, full cut signature of John A. Dix, dated “6 April 1876” in his hand. The autograph, written in rich brown ink on toned paper, reads:
“John A. Dix / 6 April 1876.”
There is a faint notation in another hand at the top (“Nov. 30 / 10”), possibly from a later collector or archivist. The card shows moderate age toning, but the writing remains dark, legible, and well-preserved. This piece has been authenticated and slabbed by PSA/DNA, earning a Near Mint 7 autograph grade.
Historical Context:
John Adams Dix (1798–1879) was a distinguished American statesman, soldier, and diplomat who served in a wide range of important roles during the 19th century. A former U.S. Senator from New York, Dix is most famous for his 1861 order as Secretary of the Treasury: “If anyone attempts to haul down the American flag, shoot him on the spot.” He later served as a Union major general during the Civil War and was appointed Minister to France before being elected Governor of New York (1873–1874). By 1876, when this autograph was signed, Dix had recently concluded his governorship and remained an elder statesman of national significance.
Authentication & Encapsulation:
Certified and encapsulated by PSA/DNA, the signature is preserved in a tamper-evident slab with the label:
"CUT – JOHN ADAMS DIX – PSA/DNA CERTIFIED – AUTO GRADE NM 7"
Certification number: 85481281.
Closing Appeal:
This signed and dated piece from one of the most versatile and influential figures of 19th-century America offers collectors a tangible connection to a statesman whose career spanned war, diplomacy, and high office. With its PSA certification and clear historical context, it is a valuable addition for collectors of Civil War-era autographs, New York political history, or early Republican Party leadership.
