Pierce M. B. Young Dated Cut Inscription & Signature | Asheville, N.C. | August 30, 1890 | PSA/DNA Certified Authentic Auto | Certification #85882443
Description:
Original handwritten cut containing a complete closing inscription and signature of Pierce Manning Butler Young (1836-1896), Confederate general, diplomat, and United States Congressman. Written in brown ink on a cream-colored paper cut, the piece is dated at the top "Asheville, N.C. Aug. 30, 1890" and reads:
"Asheville, N.C. Aug. 30, 1890
Very Truly Yours
P. M. B. Young"
The handwriting remains elegant and fully legible, with Young's flowing signature prominently displayed beneath the complimentary closing. The cut exhibits light, even age toning consistent with its nineteenth-century origin. The reverse bears old collector notations identifying the signer but contains no additional writing from Young. The autograph has been professionally authenticated and encapsulated by PSA/DNA for preservation and display.
Historical Context:
Pierce Manning Butler Young served with distinction as a Confederate cavalry officer during the American Civil War, rising to the rank of major general and serving under General Robert E. Lee during the final campaigns of the conflict. Following the war, he became a prominent Georgia politician, serving multiple terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. President Grover Cleveland later appointed Young as U.S. Minister to Guatemala, where he represented American diplomatic interests from 1893 until his death in 1896. Dated autograph inscriptions from Young's post-war years are desirable to collectors because they connect his later public life with one of the South's notable military and political figures.
Authentication & Encapsulation:
The autograph has been authenticated and encapsulated by PSA/DNA as Authentic Auto. The PSA/DNA certification number is 85882443, as shown on the slab label. The tamper-evident PSA holder provides long-term protection while allowing both the front and reverse of the historic cut to be viewed.
- Additional Documentation & Provenance: At buyer’s request, Historical Autographs Gallery will include an additional “Historical Autographs Gallery Certificate” signed by our company founder Luke Pascal at no cost.
Closing Appeal:
Featuring a fully dated inscription, complimentary closing, and attractive signature, this PSA/DNA-authenticated Pierce M. B. Young autograph offers significantly greater historical interest than a signature alone. Its combination of Civil War, Congressional, and diplomatic associations makes it a compelling addition to collections devoted to Confederate history, nineteenth-century American politics, or distinguished historical autographs.
