Description:
A striking late-life autograph of Confederate General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, boldly signed "G. T. Beauregard" and dated "1892" in his hand. The signature is executed in dark ink on a rectangular cream-colored paper cut, with an elegant underline extending beneath the name. The large, flowing autograph remains exceptionally clear and visually prominent.

The reverse exhibits expected evidence of its former mounting or removal from another surface, including areas of paper residue and discoloration. The front displays general age toning and minor scattered spotting consistent with a nineteenth-century paper artifact. Importantly, the signature itself remains strong and readily legible.

Historical Context:
Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard was born in Louisiana on May 28, 1818. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he finished second in the Class of 1838, Beauregard served as an engineer in the Mexican-American War before briefly becoming superintendent of West Point in 1861. After Louisiana seceded, he entered Confederate service and became the Confederacy's first brigadier general.

Beauregard is most closely associated with the opening of the American Civil War. In Charleston in April 1861, he commanded Confederate forces confronting the Federal garrison at Fort Sumter under Major Robert Anderson, who had previously been one of Beauregard's instructors at West Point. Beauregard formally demanded the fort's evacuation before Confederate batteries opened fire on April 12, 1861.

His Civil War career subsequently included command responsibilities at First Manassas, Shiloh, Corinth, Charleston, and Petersburg. In June 1864, his forces played a critical role in defending Petersburg during the initial Union assaults, helping prevent the city's immediate capture before additional Confederate forces arrived.

The handwritten date "1892" gives this autograph additional historical interest. Beauregard signed it during the final year of his life: he died in New Orleans on February 20, 1893, at age 74.
