Sam Houston Autograph Cut Signed – PSA/DNA Certified, Encapsulated
Description:
Autograph cut boldly signed “Sam Houston” in dark ink on a small manuscript fragment, removed from a free frank. The signature displays Houston’s distinctive sweeping cursive, with strong pen strokes and clear legibility. The autograph remains well-centered on the cut and retains excellent visual presence despite minor age-related toning and small ink transfer marks typical of mid-19th century manuscript material.
The signature is preserved within a PSA/DNA encapsulated holder, providing both authentication and long-term protection. The cut itself shows natural aging consistent with historical documents of the period, with a warm patina that enhances its historical character.
Historical Context:
Sam Houston (1793–1863) was one of the most remarkable and influential figures in 19th-century American and Texan history. A soldier, statesman, and frontiersman, Houston played a central role in the creation and political development of the Republic of Texas.
Houston first gained national prominence as a protégé of Andrew Jackson, serving as a congressman and later Governor of Tennessee before resigning and moving to Texas. There he became the leading military and political figure of the Texas independence movement. His greatest achievement came in 1836, when he commanded Texian forces to a decisive victory over Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto, securing Texas’ independence from Mexico.
Following independence, Houston served as the first elected President of the Republic of Texas (1836–1838) and again from 1841–1844. After Texas joined the United States in 1845, he became one of its first U.S. Senators, serving from 1846 to 1859. He later served as Governor of Texas (1859–1861).
Houston’s career ended dramatically at the outset of the Civil War when he refused to swear loyalty to the Confederacy after Texas seceded from the Union. As a result, he was removed from office in 1861, becoming one of the few prominent Southern leaders who openly opposed secession.
Autographs of Sam Houston are highly desirable due to his unique legacy as a figure who shaped both American frontier history and the formation of Texas as an independent republic and later a U.S. state.
