Description:
Offered here is a Typed Letter Signed (TLS) by Charles A. Lindbergh, dated July 24, 1939, written from Lloyd Neck, Colgate Estate, Huntington, Long Island, New York, and personally signed “Charles A. Lindbergh” in dark ink. The one-page typed letter is addressed to Mr. Paul Cordes of 401 East 58th Street, New York, New York, and concerns the handling and ordering of photographic prints of Lindbergh’s wife.
The letter reads in full:
“Lloyd Neck
Colgate Estate
Huntington, L.I.
New York
July 24, 1939
Dear Mr. Cordes:
I have just returned from Washington and received a case containing the photographs of my wife. Thank you very much for sending them. I apologize for not writing to you long ago about these matters but my time has been completely taken up with other things, and the question of ordering photographs abroad was somewhat complicated by the high customs duties.
I am returning in the case two photographs which we have selected and of which we would like to have one dozen each of the same type that you made of my wife. When these are completed, could you send them to me at this address?
Would you consider making photographs without the folders, with simply a plain white border? If so, could you let me know what the cost would be per dozen?
With best regards,
Charles A. Lindbergh
Charles A. Lindbergh”
Typed initials “CAL:CLG” appear beneath the signature, indicating dictation and typing attribution. The letter retains the typed return address block and recipient details at the lower left.

Historical Context:
Charles Augustus Lindbergh (1902–1974) became one of the most famous figures of the 20th century after completing the first solo nonstop transatlantic flight in 1927 aboard the Spirit of St. Louis, flying from New York to Paris. The achievement instantly made Lindbergh an international celebrity and a pioneer of modern aviation.
By 1939, Lindbergh had become a prominent public figure not only in aviation but also in political and cultural discussions surrounding the rapidly escalating tensions in Europe prior to the outbreak of World War II. During this period he divided his time between the United States and Europe while maintaining residences such as the Colgate Estate at Lloyd Neck on Long Island.
The letter references photographs of Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Charles Lindbergh’s wife, who was herself a noted aviator and celebrated author. Together, the Lindberghs formed one of the most famous couples of the early aviation era. Correspondence relating to the Lindbergh family and their public image offers collectors an intimate glimpse into the personal life of one of aviation’s most legendary figures.
