Historical Context:
Richard F. Gordon Jr. (1929–2017) was a U.S. Navy test pilot and NASA astronaut best known as the Command Module Pilot of Apollo 12, the second crewed Moon landing mission in 1969. While crewmates Pete Conrad and Alan Bean explored the lunar surface, Gordon remained in lunar orbit aboard the command module Yankee Clipper. He had previously flown as Pilot of Gemini 11 in 1966, where he performed a spacewalk and helped achieve one of the highest Earth orbits of any crewed mission. Gordon was also slated to command the canceled Apollo 18 mission. Though he never walked on the Moon, his contributions were essential to the success of the Apollo program.
