Description:
An exceptionally scarce Real Photo Postcard (RPPC) depicting the body of Bob Dalton, leader of the notorious Dalton Gang, following the failed Coffeyville, Kansas bank raid of October 5, 1892. The striking image shows Dalton laid in an open coffin after his death during the infamous shootout that brought the gang's criminal career to a violent end.

The postcard bears the printed caption:

"Bob Dalton, The Leader of the gang, Oct. 5, 1892."

At the bottom of the image appears the photographer's credit:

"Copyrighted by Tackett."

Printed on AGFA ANSCO photographic postcard stock, the reverse features a divided-back format reading "POST CARD – MADE IN U.S.A." The postcard remains unused, with no writing, postage, or postal cancellations.

The RPPC exhibits excellent photographic contrast with expected light edge wear and minor age toning consistent with vintage photographic postcards, making it an impressive display piece documenting one of the most famous episodes of the American Old West.

Historical Context:
Robert "Bob" Dalton (1869–1892) led the Dalton Gang during its brief but notorious career robbing banks and trains throughout the American Southwest. On October 5, 1892, Bob, his brother Grat Dalton, Dick Broadwell, and Bill Powers attempted the unprecedented robbery of two banks simultaneously in Coffeyville, Kansas.

Recognized by local citizens despite their disguises, the outlaws were met with fierce armed resistance. The ensuing gun battle left Bob Dalton, Grat Dalton, Dick Broadwell, and Bill Powers dead, while Bob's younger brother Emmett Daltonsurvived despite sustaining numerous gunshot wounds.

Following the raid, photographs of the deceased gang members became some of the most iconic images of the American frontier. Real Photo Postcards reproducing these historic photographs were issued in limited quantities during the early twentieth century and remain highly collectible among enthusiasts of Western Americana, outlaw history, and early photography.
