Title: Andrew Johnson & William Seward Dual Signed Display – Victims of Lincoln Assassination Conspiracy – JSA Certified
Description:
Offered here is a historically compelling 8.5" x 11" display titled "1865 Lincoln Assassination (Continued): Other Victims of the Conspiracy", featuring authentic signatures from two central figures in the dramatic events surrounding President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination—Vice President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William Seward. Their original dip-pen signatures are affixed beneath vintage portrait images and surrounded by contemporary newspaper clippings describing the failed attempts on their lives during the coordinated attack by John Wilkes Booth and his co-conspirators.
Andrew Johnson’s bold signature appears clearly on a cut segment mounted under his photograph and is accompanied by the note that he was targeted but spared when his would-be assassin lost his nerve. William Seward’s cut signature appears beneath his portrait, with news excerpts referencing the brutal attack he survived by Lewis Paine. A small loss is noted at the lower left corner of the Seward signature cut, though it in no way impacts the autograph itself.
Historical Context:
On the night of April 14, 1865, while Booth fatally shot President Lincoln, Lewis Paine (Powell) forced his way into the Seward residence and attempted to murder Secretary Seward in his bed, inflicting grievous injuries. Simultaneously, another conspirator, George Atzerodt, was tasked with killing Vice President Johnson but lost his nerve and fled. This coordinated plan was intended to decapitate the Union government and throw the nation into chaos. Both Johnson and Seward would go on to play pivotal roles in the fragile post-war reconstruction of the United States—Johnson as Lincoln’s successor, and Seward as a continued force in U.S. foreign policy.
Authentication & Encapsulation:
This dual-signature display is authenticated by James Spence Authentication (JSA) and is accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity (LOA). Certification Number YY47929 confirms the authenticity of both signatures, written in black ink with a dip pen and consistent with period examples.
Closing Appeal:
An exceptional dual-signed artifact directly tied to one of the most consequential events in American history. The convergence of authentic signatures, original news excerpts, and stark portraiture makes this display a compelling centerpiece for collectors of presidential, Civil War, or assassination-related memorabilia. A powerful, well-preserved relic of the night that altered the course of a nation.
