Historical Context:
Andrew Carnegie (1835–1919) rose from humble Scottish origins to become one of the wealthiest industrialists of the Gilded Age. After emigrating to the United States, he built the Carnegie Steel Company, later sold to J.P. Morgan to form U.S. Steel. Retiring as one of the richest men in the world, Carnegie turned to philanthropy, dedicating his fortune to libraries, universities, and cultural institutions across America and abroad. This 1901 letter, written from his Scottish estate Skibo Castle, reflects his personal life during his later years when he balanced family, travel, and the enjoyment of his Highland retreat while also planning his philanthropic ventures.
