Title:
Aaron Burr Signed Retaining Fee Receipt – August 10, 1791 – PSA/DNA Certified Authentic Auto
Description:
Autograph manuscript receipt signed, “Aaron Burr,” dated August 10, 1791. One page, 12mo, penned entirely in Burr’s hand. The document reads in full:
“Rec’d of Mr. H. Ten Eycke by the hand
of Mr G W Van Schaick Ten pounds as
a Retaining fee.”
Signed boldly beneath the text, “Aaron Burr.” Docketed below: “N York Augt 10th 1791.”
The manuscript remains legible with faint scattered soiling and foxing, visible folds consistent with period handling, and remnants of hinging at the upper edge verso. The verso bears docketing in unknown contemporary hands, adding to its period authenticity. A scarce early legal financial document from Burr’s active New York law practice during the first years of the new Republic.
Historical Context:
In 1791, Aaron Burr (1756–1836) was an established New York attorney and rising political figure, having served as a Revolutionary War officer and soon to become United States Senator from New York (1791–1797). This receipt documents a retaining fee — an advance legal payment — reflecting Burr’s professional legal work during the formative years of the United States under the new Constitution.
Such early financial documents predate standardized American banking instruments, offering insight into the legal and monetary customs of post-Revolutionary America. Occurring in the same year Burr was elected to the U.S. Senate, this manuscript captures him at a pivotal moment in his ascent within national politics.
Authentication & Encapsulation:
Encapsulated and authenticated by PSA/DNA as “Authentic Auto.” Certification number 85750956. The document is securely housed within a PSA holder, ensuring long-term preservation and verification of Burr’s signature.

Closing Appeal:
An exceptional early American legal and financial document signed by one of the most controversial and consequential figures of the founding era. As a retaining-fee receipt from 1791, this piece provides tangible evidence of Burr’s law practice and professional life in New York during the infancy of the Republic.
For collectors of early American financial instruments and signed checks, this manuscript receipt serves as an outstanding and historically significant substitute — offering the same documentary and monetary character as a signed check, but from a period predating standardized American banking forms. A rare and desirable acquisition for advanced collectors of Revolutionary and Early Republic autographs. A financial document connected to the man who killed the architect of America’s modern financial system.
