Historical Context:
Alexander Hamilton (1755 or 1757–1804) was a Founding Father of the United States, the first Secretary of the Treasury, and a key architect of the American financial system. Born in the West Indies and rising from humble beginnings, Hamilton became George Washington’s trusted aide during the Revolutionary War. He later authored the majority of The Federalist Papers, which argued for the ratification of the U.S. Constitution. As Treasury Secretary, he established the nation’s first central bank, managed the federal debt, and laid the foundation for modern American capitalism. A fierce political rival of Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr, Hamilton’s life was cut short in a famous duel with Burr in 1804. His legacy endures as a visionary who helped shape the structure and stability of the young republic.
